One main reason for putting off a project, no matter what subject, is not having the supplies needed.
A supply-on-hand of art products can lessen the task that some parents face when preparing for art projects.
There are some basic ingredients to keep on stock that can get you through many activities. The list may look long, but you probably already have quite a few on hand.

The Basics:
brushes
Start with brush sets
Have some chunky brushes down to very thin ones and a few more in between
The more you use them, the more you will know what brush you like best, adding to your collection in time
paper
construction paper, regular and large all colors with black and white
large paper; sketch pad 14x17 or larger
small pack of tissue papers, multi-color packs
tracing paper
graph paper
copier paper for drawing
writing tools
markers, fine and thick point
pencils
charcoals
different colored ink pens (one pen with multiple colors is a good choice...my kids love them..just that they don't last long)
coloring mediums
tempra paints (can get by with primaries, black and white)
chalk pastels
watercolor set
colored pencils
crayons
finger paints for younger ones
other products
erasers
white glue
glue sticks
rubber cement
tape
cups for water/painting
rags or paper towels
feathers
yarns
string
buttons and other "stuff" for collages
(I have a recycle bin, well I have many, to keep what-nots, bottle caps, can tabs, and even dryer lint! Anything that I think will make for good collage medium or other project).
Keep these supplies in a box or on a dedicated shelf. If your work area is not by the stock area, have a carry-container to tote the needed supplies for a specific project.
One of these days, I'll show you what my art shelves look like...one of these days.
