The Experiment Project #3

Welcome to The Online Art Club with Mrs. Hayes.

No sign-up...

JUST DO IT...

This club is without an official name, so until then, it will be known as
"The Online Art Club with Mrs. Hayes".

Being a member means you will participate in regular assignments of fun art activities.

Each activity will have a due date.
Complete the project, scan or download a picture of your finished work, and email it to me.
I will post the results the day after the due date in a Project Gallery.

There will be no personal information posted, other than your first name, age and title (or other thoughts about the project). You may also choose to have no information tagged to your project.

Future projects will be posted soon after the Gallery is posted.
Usually the next day, unless otherwise stated.

To view entries from project #2, click on Photo Gallery #2, to the left.

Project #3

The Experiment with Mirror Drawings

Due date: 10/1

Mirror Drawings

This week I am going to have you practice mirror drawings.
Let's test to see if they really do work at helping to improve your drawing skills.
These exercises can be found in Drawing with Children, by Mona Brookes (see product page)

Mirror Drawings are a great way to train you brain to see things differently, which will produce better rendering of a subject matter, among other things.
More on this information can be found in Drawing with Children.
Another book to explain "brain training" is Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Betty Edwards.

How to do a mirror drawing...

Mirror image drawings are done by repeating the line design
on the opposite side of the paper.
The task is to copy it as it would appear in the mirror (opposite, backwards, reverse).

Try writing your name on a piece of paper and holding that up to read in the mirror
to get a better idea of what you are to be doing.

Assignment pages

These are the images you are to practice drawing for a few days in a row.
Try to do them daily without skipping any days.

You should be able to open the picture, copy and paste so you can save and print...

The experiment:

Draw a simple still-life first
Practice drawing the mirror image of the given exercises daily (not skipping a day)
Do this for a few days
Redraw the same still-life after the few days have passed

Before starting on you mirror images...

Choose a very simple object and draw the still-life

Examples to choose for drawing:
an apple
banana
the front door
a toy
a book
a chair

...anything that won't move while you are drawing it.

Keep this still-life drawing for the end of the experiment.

After you have done the experiment pages
for a few days in a row, redraw the same still-life.
Let me know if you noticed any change in drawing your still life.

Questions about the experiment...

Did you notice more details with the second drawing?

Do you think the mirror image practice helped or was it just because you had drawn the same thing once before?

If this experiment made no change, do you think that only a few days of training your brain is a fair experiment?

Would it help if you practiced mirror images more?

You can try drawing your own mirror image exercises.

Draw two parallel lines that are the same length
one at the top and one at the bottom of your paper

Starting at the top, bring a solid line down to the bottom (on the same side)
Make the line flow any which way, curved or straight
No crossing over the line

Now repeat that line in mirror image at the other side of the parallel lines...

It is fun to draw a profile of a face;
when you do a mirror on the other side, it turns into a vase!
(profile is whay you see when you look at a head from the side)

I would love to see both of your still-life drawings. Add any comments about the experiment that you might want to share.

Have fun drawing with a right mind!
Mrs. Hayes
