This club is without an official name, so until then, it will be known as "The Online Art Club with Mrs. Hayes".
Being a member means you will participate in regular assignments of fun art activities.
Each activity will have a due date. That is when I will post the picture you send me of your results.
Complete the project, scan or download a picture of your finished work, and email it to me.
I will post the results the day after the due date in a Project Gallery.
There will be no personal information posted, other than your first name, age and title (or other thoughts about the project). You may also choose to have no information tagged to your project.
Future projects will be posted soon after the Gallery is posted.
Usually the next day, unless stated otherwise .

We are now doing Project #4
PASTELS
Due date will be 10/8
I am using another project from a site I have used in the past...
You can find this project here:
http://www.artprojectsforkids.org/search/label/chalk%20pastel
Another site that I loved for pastels, among other things, is here:

FYI
I haven't reviewed the sites in their entirety, so view them with that in mind...
If you are not familiar with pastel chalks...
THEY ARE MESSY
But they are so nice to use and create some wonderful works of art.
My suggestions before you begin working with pastels:
I suggest preparing the table with an old plastic-coated table cloth. Wipes off nicely (use old cloth).
Also, if your work area is carpeted, put down plastic on the floor. You can purchase large pieces from the hardware stores in the paint section.
Remember that if there is chalk on the floor, little feet stepping in it will have chalk on them also.
A good trick is to use old socks to cover those feet while they are on the plastic or in the art area. When they are done, have them take the socks off before they run off.
If using plastic, roll it up when done and shake it, hose it, or wipe it outside.
Some kids don't mind the mess and get the chalk ALL over and some can't stand the feeling of it on their fingers. For the latter, it is helpful to have a damp rag handy for them to wipe their fingers on.
That's all I can think of...
Rules for kids:
Keep in mind that whatever you touch with your chalky fingers, you will get chalk on it.
Try not to touch the paper with chalky fingers.
Don't lay the chalk on the paper, lay it to the side.
Do not blow the chalk off the paper or rub it off, lift the paper up and let it fall off by tapping it on a free space of the table cloth.
Here we go....
Project #4
Pastel Pipes
For this project, you will need:
black paper, any size (I used 14 x 18)
large damp cloth if necessary
old plastic table cloth
pastels (chalk)
at least 4 different colors; plus black and white (6 total)
clear spray paint or hairspray (optional)
MisterArt is out of Houston, TX.
Use the icon, top left, to search their site for my suggestions on types of chalk to use.
Search for product #s: 69838, or 13667, or 45369.
Or view product page for pastels...
Let's begin:
To start out with, if you have a new box of pastels, you should break them in by literally breaking them! This is what my box of pastels looks like:
If they aren't broken when I go to use them, I break it.
I think that the smaller pieces are easier to work with.
Pick your four colors with black and white
Turn your paper either way to start.
Draw two lines from top to bottom of the paper.
Color in between the lines.
Run a white piece of chalk along one side...
Run black along the other.
You will smooth the white with a flat finger (not just the tip) or a neatly folded tissue (no hanging edges sticking out). (I had to show this to the boys by pressing their finger flatter and guiding them a few strokes)
Clean the fingers and do the same with the black...
Using a different color, start the next one in the opposite direction, to cross over the first.
Repeat this process:
Adding a pipe, perpendicular to the last
Using a different color each time
Adding white to the same side of each pipe (top or bottom; left or right)
Black will be the other side (keep them the same with each pipe)
Make sure hands are wiped off before changing colors or from black to white
When the fourth and final pipe is done, clean up the negative space (black)
Wrap a finger with tissue and wipe the black clean, try not to touch the pipes
You get to see mine before the due date as I think this will be helpful.
The back will have chalk on it. So be careful where you lay it down or hang it.
If you spray it with a light coat of clear or even hairspray, that will help keep it from rubbing off.
Very light coats...(if the coats are too heavy, the work will disappear by getting the chalk wet).
When that dries, you can gently wipe off the back.

Can't wait to see the artwork...
Hope you had fun!
