Project #8

Christmas may be my favorite Holiday,
but fall is my favorite season.
So, this week's project will reflect this time of year.

This project can be used to introduce how a mosaic or stained glass work is made.
Other than that, it can be just a fun fall project.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pieces of Pumpkin (mosaic/stained glass intro)
Due date: 11/5/12
We will need:
Black construction paper
White glue
Old chunky paint brush
Old cup or bowl for glue
tissue paper or construction paper (green, orange, and light brown...at least)
pencil and eraser
Things to think about...
If the pumpkin project is to resemble stained glass work, the pattern will leave room for a soldering line between parts of the pattern.
Either in your head, or by actually drawing that line, make sure to leave that space black (don't glue paper there). This should be a thin to medium line.
The parts of this pattern are the stem and the pumpkin sections.
If you incorporate other things in your design, remember this soldering line throughout the picture.
There are links below to read about stained glass.
If the project will be resembling more of a mosaic, keep the torn paper pieces (and I suggest construction for this one) a bit apart from each other. For this design, I suggest still keeping the soldering line between sections.
Onward...
Any size paper will do, I am going to use 9 x 12.
Trace a pumpkin on your paper.
I think I will place mine to the side so that I can incorporate some vines in the picture.
If you need a pattern; copy, paste (enlarge if needed) and print this out for tracing...
Lay the template on the paper, trace over the outline with a pen. Take the template off and use the pen to retrace over the indention mark from the first tracing.
Remember the spaces between sections. (omit that oval on the top of the stem for younger students).
Tear the paper into small pieces, about 1/2 inch.
Use the brush to apply the glue.
Brush the glue on the black paper where you will put the tissue. Then, you can brush the top of the tissue to make it lay down better.
Do not over glue, it will cause the paper to buckle more.
Also keep in mind that where you put the glue, your black paper will be darker, so work as neatly as possible.
I used tissue paper, but I will be having the boys use construction paper...
Okay, so I am actually still telling you with words,
The video is easier than WRITING it in words!
I have included some sites that show beautiful stained glass structures. Just click the title to go to the link.
