Christmas Ornaments
Every year, I make my boys an ornament. They vary from material to subject matter, but I get one done for them every year.
I found a lot of ornament ideas on Pinterest (imagine that). Let's make this one together. I will walk you through the steps that I took to complete this. At the end, I will share a couple of more ideas that I may try with the boys during this Christmas break.
Materials needed:
card stock, you choose the colors (I will show using 2)
dime
pen
large needle
thick thread
two beads
1 inch of a plastic drinking straw
scissors
glue (optional)
Supplies...forgot the 1" of straw.
Did not have thick thread, so doubled what I had.
Directions:
Cut 18 - 3.5 x .5 inch strips of paper.
If using two colors, do 9 of each for a total of 18.
If using 3 colors, do 6 of each color.
Cut disks from each color you will be using. If you are using only one color, cut two. Use a dime to trace for this sized ornament.
String the thread through the bead. Pull one end of the thread through the bead then tie a knot (with needle still on thread). Move the knot to the eye of the needle.
Poke through one of the circles, use a thimble, or cork board. I used my cutting board, it poked through at the cross-sections of the graph. It hurts when the needle pokes through into your finger!
After threading the bead and circle, pull the thread tightly through.
Much better for the fingers.
Fold each strip of paper in half, giving it a light crease. Alternate the colors and stack them.
Poke your needle (with the bead and circle on the end) through one of the ends of all the folded strips. Make sure the creases are all going the same way.
When you have threaded all the strips, thread the 1" piece of straw (about 1.5 inches). Then begin stringing the other ends of papers. Start threading from the opposite end of strips than the bottom.
Lay the strips in a neat stack and begin threading the top strips from the top of that stack. Push needle up through the underside.
See picture for example.
You may skip the straw, this just keeps its shape better.
I have threaded one end of the stack, added the straw,
and starting to thread the other ends of the stack.
Using the board to poke the needle through.
Let the strips layer on top of the last one.
Pull tight when all strung.
Once you have finished threading all the strips, poke the thread through the second circle and then the last bead.
You could leave it as is or string the ends of the thread through the top bead one more time to keep the bead in place. Cut the thread to release the needle and tie a knot. I tied one at the top and one at the bead.
Cut thread at the needle and knot.
Voila! Merry making; making many.
If there is a gap, just hang the gap to the back of the tree!
This is it for the Christmas themed projects and for the rest of the year. I will be returning back to blogging after the first of the new year with more ideas.
Please enjoy the past projects during your break. I will post any completed work to the photo gallery that matches; just email a photo of your work and I'll post it ASAP.
God bless you and your family,
Merry Christmas!
